Check out Member of Congress Louise M. Slaughter speaking at the Presidents Health Care Reform summit. The Buffalo/Rochester Congress woman spoke about a Buffalo woman who was so poor that she wore her late sister’s teeth — highlighted the early going at today’s health care summit at the White House. The Toronto gay newspaper Xtra reports that Toronto Maple Leaf general manager Brian Burke has pledged to march in the Toronto Pride Parade in honor of his gay son Brendan, who died Feb 5. From Sports Illustrated: “After Brendan publicly revealed his sexual preference, Brian was flooded with requests to do advocacy work on behalf of gays. He told the groups that while he supported his son, he had other causes: land conservation, blood donation and children’s literacy. He didn’t want to dilute that work. This, too, changed on that Friday in February. Brendan’s causes are Brian’s now. He will do a public-service announcement aimed at eliminating the bullying of gay children. And he plans to march in the Toronto Pride Parade. ‘I’d promised him I would march with him,’ says Burke, who briefly left the Olympics last Friday to attend a memorial service for Brendan at Miami of Ohio. ‘He won’t be there, but I will.’” (via Queerty) Brendan received international media attention in 2009 after ESPN wrote about his coming out story. BUFFALO – Sean Cooney, an attorney and candidate for the New York State Senate 58th District currently held by William Stachowski, received the first endorsement of the race when Stonewall Democrats of Western New York gave him their unanimous endorsement. Cooney, a resident of the Buffalo, was one of three who were considered for the Stonewall endorsement. Incumbent Senator, William Stachowski, (D) was one of the eight Democrats that voted with Senate Republicans to defeat Marriage Equality in December 2009. Stachowski did not submit an endorsement questionnaire. Cooney thanked his supporters and credited his long-time support of lgbt issues as an essential factor in winning the endorsement. “lgbt issues have always been important to me, long before I considered a run for public office. I am proud to have the endorsement of the Stonewall Democrats and look forward to working closely with the lgbt community.” Cooney cited important legislation such as Marriage Equality, Dignity for All Students Act, and the Gender-Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) as important lgbt issues he plans to work on. After the unanimous endorsement, Stonewall Democrats’ President, Bryan Ball, said “We’re thrilled to support such a progressive and independent minded candidate. Sean has been a champion of lgbt rights for years, and as state senator, we know that he will always vigorously defend equality and justice.” ![]() Leafs Gm Brian Burke and his son Brendan Burke, 21, who was killed in a two-car crash Friday in Indiana. Tragic — Brendan Burke, 21, was killed in an automobile crash on a snowy highway in Indiana on Friday. Burke an University of Miami-Ohio student, had drawn the attention of the hockey world due to a November 2009 ESPN.com article about his inspirational coming out story. The ESPN story detailed the love and acceptance Burke got from his dad, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke and his family during the coming out process. Brian Burke is a legendary NHL general manager, know for his toughness and building winning teams. Brendan Burke, of Canton, Mass., and his passenger, Mark A. Reedy, 18, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died at the scene of a two-vehicle accident at U.S. 35 north of Economy, Indiana. The accident was reported at 2:50 p.m. Investigators said Burke was driving eastbound on U.S. 35 in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee when, according to witnesses, the vehicle slid sideways into an oncoming 1997 Ford Truck driven by 24-year-old Michael Moreland of Lynn. Moreland was not hurt. Burke was a student assistant for the University of Miami-Ohio hockey team and had hoped for a career that would lead him into NHL management. The Washington Post reports that the New York Civil Liberties Union helped Robert Sullivan and his son, Jacob, file a federal lawsuit against the Mohawk school district claiming it failed to protect Jacob. Now the Department of Justice is seeking to intervene in the case. At issue is a question about how federal civil rights law protects people who do not conform to common gender roles. The bullying by classmates and taunts of “homo” only got worse after Jacob began dyeing his hair and wearing eyeliner in eighth grade. One student scrawled “I hope you die” on his shoe, he said; another drew a pocket knife on him. Jacob’s grades dropped, and he missed school from fear. His father tried repeatedly to get school officials in their working-class village in upstate New York to help protect his son from harassment. The response by the Mohawk Central School District, according to a federal lawsuit, was to do “virtually nothing.” “Everything was bad,” Jacob – who is identified as “J.L.” in the lawsuit and didn’t want to draw attention to his new school by having his last name used in this story – said this week. “I hyperventilated when I left the school … and I didn’t want to come back the next day, or ever.” The 15-year-old might soon get a measure of satisfaction. The lawsuit filed by Jacob and his father against the school district with the New York Civil Liberties Union could be close to settlement, according to both sides. The negotiations come as the U.S. Department of Justice seeks to intervene in the case, citing the “important issues” it raises in enforcing federal civil rights laws. Truth Wins Out praised President Barack Obama today for his bo ld speech at the National Prayer Breakfast condemning Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill. The bill aims to imprison, hunt down and even execute gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. The bill also threatens imprisonment for those who do not turn in their LGBT friends and family members to authorities. In his speech, Obama said: “We may disagree about gay marriage, but surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are — whether it’s here in the United States or, as Hillary mentioned, more extremely in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda.” The President’s words were particularly powerful given the setting of this breakfast, which is hosted by the fundamentalist group known as The Family. This secretive organization is directly linked to the “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda. The bill’s sponsor, David Bahati, is a key member of The Family. “We applaud President Obama for having the courage to confront those responsible for the heinous anti-gay bill in Uganda,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director of Truth Wins Out. “We hope that the President’s laudable stand makes it clear to Family members in the United States and Uganda that the world is watching. Religion can no longer be used to justify bigotry, intolerance and persecution anywhere on the face of the earth.” Besen is the coordinator of The American Prayer Hour, which is an alternative to the National Prayer Breakfast. Fifteen national organization’s launched the American Prayer Hour to shine a spotlight on The Family’s nefarious role in Uganda on the week of their annual National Prayer Breakfast. There are American Prayer Hour events in 20 cities across the nation. “The safe course would have been for President Obama to remain silent,” said TWO’s Besen. “Instead, he walked into The Family’s house and held them accountable for their actions in Uganda. It was a huge victory for human rights and the president’s actions were courageous and honorable.” Truth Wins Out is a New York City-based non-profit organization that fights religious extremism and the ex-gay industry. BUFFALO — Niagara Wheatfield was the host of the Second Gay/Straight Alliance-Diversity Club Conference. On January 21 the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) of Niagara Wheatfield High School in Niagara County played host to 100 high school students from around Niagara Erie Counties. The students came from 18 different Erie and Niagara county high schools. Gay and Lesbian Youth Services of Western New York (GLYS) provided resources and assistance to the event including bus transportation to enable GSA members from Buffalo Cheektowaga, Amherst and Lockport schools to attend the gay youth after school confab. Kenmore West High School teacher Darcy France and three students facilitated an interactive session on how to respond to anti-gay bullying. The KWHS peer educators also presented at the first GSA/diversity club conference held last April at Ken West, which was attended by 64 students from 10 schools. David Cantaffa of UB’s graduate school of education, Gateway Longview social worker Michelle Recchin, author Lyndsey D’Arcangelo, a Niagara University student and a GLYS Drop-in Center member made up a panel that addressed coming out issues. The shared their experiences ranging from being out in high school, coming out after marriage, and coming out to family as a lifetime experience. Members of the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus also took part in the conference. Prior to sharing a song that they performed for the first time after 9/11, all ten men shared parts of their stories with the students. Chorus member Flip Taporca and his partner, Bruce, got a big hand when he announced that they have been together for 24 years. Hearing the experiences of panelists and Chorus member was a highlight for the young people at the conference. Some recognized that the environment is much improved while others were buoyed by knowing that there can be happiness, relationships and meaningful careers on the other side of high school. The 2009 Ken West event, the first of its kind in WNY, gave other clubs the freedom to host other activities. Coming up in March is a reading by D’Arcangelo, a graduate of Frontier High School, that will be hosted by the FHS. The Sweet Home GSA has rescheduled a snowed out December dinner and movie night for April. Two other schools are considering organizing activities for members of all WNY GSAs and diversity clubs. On Tuesday, April 27th, GLYS will sponsor a bus to take interested students to Albany for the 2010 Equality & Justice Day.
