Buffalo on the new list of recession-proof metro areas, with six of 21 spots, according to MetroMonitor, a quarterly report released by Brookings Institute’s Metropolitan Policy Program. Buffalo in fact took the number 5 spot ahead of America’s fastest growing metro, Dallas, Texas.

Buffalo has had a lot of practice living with economic challenges. It is about time that all that practice seems to have been noticed. The truth lies in the fact that because metro Buffalo never experienced the soaring highs of economic activity and the outrageous run up in housing prices there was no fallout when the economic house of cards collapsed under the George W. Bush mismanagement. To reverse the common exercise adage… No Gain, No Pain.

The champions of the National Hockey League are proving to be champions of open-mindedness. They have accepted an invitation from the Chicago Gay Hockey Association to be part of the city’s Gay Pride Parade on Sunday. Sopel, a Blackhawks defenseman, is bringing his family and the Stanley Cup.

“I’m honored to do it,” Sopel told the Chicago Sun-Times.

He added that his participation is also in memory of Brendan Burke, the openly gay son of Toronto Maple Leafs president Brian Burke. Brendan was killed in an auto accident earlier this year.

The Stanley Cup will be in Los Angeles this week for events surrounding the NHL Draft. On Saturday, it will be shipped to Chicago at the request of Blackhawks president John McDonough.

My memory fears the flavors of New York City in the summer. Absolut Vodka has collaborated with director Spike Lee to create a limited edition Absolut Brooklyn, which has red apple and ginger flavors.

This is Spike Lee’s interpretation of his hometown. The label depicts a stoop and the front of a brownstone with the same number (165) as Lee’s childhood home in the Cobble Hill neighborhood. The original creator of Absolut, Lars Olsson Smith, whose image appears on the seal of every bottle — is adorned with Lee’s trademark cap and glasses.

Absolut Vodka chose the iconic New York borough as the fourth city in a series it launched in 2007; New Orleans, Los Angeles and Boston have previously been featured.

Absolut Boston has elderflower and black tea-flavored — Boston Tea Party? Absolut Los Angeles is blueberry, acerola cherry, acai berry and pomegranate — a fruity vodka punch. Absolut New Orleans was black pepper and mango, a bit sweet and a bit spicy, like the rum-based Hurricane cocktail linked to the city.

Time for Absolut to travel across the empire state to New York State’s west coast.

What would Absolut Buffalo taste like? Perhaps the flavor of Kümmel, a sweet, colorless liqueur flavored with caraway seed, cumin, and fennel. Kümmelweck anyone? A dash of Frank’s Hot Sauce? Logenberry? Any idea as to what flavors an Absolut Buffalo would capture?

His deceit was discovered when he fell in love with Jimmy, a contributor to his blog, and his story started to unravel.

The blog had become a popular meet-up spot for gay school aged athletes after it was profiled in outsports.com.
