Sing Out Louise!

Check out Member of Congress Louise M. Slaughter speaking at the Presidents Health Care Reform summit. The Buffalo/Rochester Congress woman spoke about a Buffalo woman who was so poor that she wore her late sister’s teeth — highlighted the early going at today’s health care summit at the White House.
“I have a constituent that you won’t believe and I know you won’t, but her sister died, this poor woman had no dentures,” Slaughter, D-Fairport, said. “She wore her dead sister’s teeth which of course were uncomfortable and did not fit. Do you believe that in America that’s where we would be?”
Slaughter’s comments quickly caused a sensation on the Internet. Democratic political consultant Peter Daou said on Twitter that Democrats “should have just let Louise Slaughter speak for them” at the summit.
Slaughter, who chairs the powerful House Rules Committee, spoke briefly but passionately at the summit, urging other lawmakers to finally come to an agreement on an issue that has been stalemated for decades.
“It would be a good thing for us while we are here in this room together to think about what’s important here,” Slaughter said. “Not nitpick, but think about all the people out there every day, the number of people that have excess deaths because they have no health insurance.”
